28 Oct 24 – 4 The Poppy

There’s an old man in my pub that has a life to reveal
He doesn’t get too drunk I think he just wants to feel
I remember my Dad never said a word about the war
Is he much the same did he think what he fought for?

These old men that we know of and just don’t give much thought
Some think that they’re a waste of space and argue should be shot
But my old man he fought for us but now who gives respect
All these people who’ve not been taught simply piling on contempt.

And back to that old man sitting quiet with his drink
I don’t know what he’s thinking cause it ain’t on pen and ink
All I know is what I know a poppy should be showed
All these guys that fought for us should get what they are owed.

And to my Dad who never really spoke about the war
I wheedled out some bits and bobs on why he fought war for
His right and wrong is as mine is and this was never taught
The rights and wrongs for us I think is why they stood and fought.

The poppy is the everlasting of us all
Without the poppy understanding will just fall
The poppy has to be kept standing tall…
The poppy!

The poppy is the strength behind us all
The root and branch the heart of large and small
The poppy is the everything that all nations must install…
The poppy!
